I’m in the process of rebuilding a 1963 short stroke Model 16 AJS into an Andy Bamford trials frame. The frame needed touching up in a few places, and I needed to source a few parts such as foot rests and aluminium mudguards.
New and original cotter pins
One of the more important parts is the cotter pin which secures the two halves of the ‘loose leg’ rear swinging arm together. The cotter pin I had was quite damaged over much of the length of the threads.
I knew that the frame was almost identical to the G3C frames made for competition use in the late 1950s and early 1960s…some of the parts were similar to the lightweight bikes of the period too.
I discovered a picture of the cotter pin used on the lightweight bikes on the AJS and Matchless Owners Club spares outlet. It actually came complete with its washer and nut; the latter may well get replaced with a Nyloc one. I took a chance and ordered it, and when it arrived, it appeared to be identical to the original Andy Bamford item.
